Importance of water

Water performs functions in our bodies that no other beverage can quite match.

Why do we need water?

Water performs functions in our bodies that no other beverage can quite match. Good, light water permeates every cell and regulates all bodily functions, such as body structure, metabolism, digestion, cardiovascular function, and much more. Water is also responsible for our consciousness, making our thought processes, feelings, and moods possible. Water is the carrier of all physical and mental information. Every bodily process depends on the presence of water, as only water possesses the ideal properties to meet the body’s diverse needs. It can be truly astonishing how extensive the range of functions of water is.

Water is a building material
Besides minerals, which make up the main components of bones and teeth, and protein, which is the main component of muscles, water is the most important building block of the body.

Water is a means of transport
As blood or lymph fluid, water ensures the transport of various substances and cells from one place in the body to another, or even out of the body.

Water is a reaction partner
Chemical reactions involving water, or even made possible by water, are constantly taking place in every cell of the body.

Water is a solvent
All bodily fluids consist primarily of water. They contain dissolved nutrients as well as substances left over from metabolic processes. These are eliminated via the urinary tract.

Water is a coolant
Water conducts heat better than air. If the body temperature is too high due to exertion or illness, the body uses its water cooling system. During sweating, water is excreted through the skin’s pores, ensuring rapid heat dissipation.

Didn't drink enough?

Our bodies have a very precise “eye” on the body’s water content. It is closely monitored and kept constant. If fluid loss is detected, fluid is drawn from the blood and tissues. This slows down blood flow and impairs the body’s excretory functions. At the same time, the supply of nutrients and oxygen to muscle cells is also reduced. This means that essential bodily functions operate at a reduced level.

After just two to four days without water, nausea, dizziness, headaches, circulatory problems, vomiting, and muscle cramps can occur. One might think that this could only happen if you got lost in the desert. However, the fact is that many people don’t even register thirst, or that many symptoms are due to dehydration.

Here are some specific indications of how the body reacts to water loss:

  • Thirst arises when we drink more than 0.5% of our body weight (0.3 – 0.4 l).
  • A loss of just 2% of our body water, e.g. through heavy sweating or diarrhea, already reduces our physical and mental performance.
